The 7 Principles of Mastering the Art of Negotiation

“Let us never negotiate out of fear. But let us never fear to negotiate.”
~John F. Kennedy (1917-1963) American president

Most of us negotiate every day without realizing it.  However mention the word “negotiation” and some people get nervous.  It frightens them.  They imagine themselves at the car dealership and the hassles and pressure associated with making a deal with someone who is an expert negotiator.  However, 99.9% of the time negotiation is simply working with someone to find a solution that benefits both parties equally.  Whether you’re negotiating with your two year old about bedtime or your biggest customer, the principles are the same.

1.  Creating a Win-Win situation.  When you approach a negotiation with the right attitude, it takes the pressure off of both parties.  What is the right attitude?  The desire for both parties to get what they want.  To create a win-win situation.  If one party is only in the process for themselves, a resolution will be difficult to come by.

2.  Listening skills.  In order to know what the other party hopes to get from a negotiation, you have to listen.  In fact, your ability to ask the right questions, and listen to the answers, is your #1 most important negotiating skill.  A skilled negotiator enters a negotiation with a questioning mindset.  When you make it your mission to learn more about your customer, you are more likely to learn quality information, information that you can use to build a rapport and establish a collaborative environment.  Look to learn what your customer needs, wants, what makes them successful, and how you can sell to them.

3.  Creativity.  This relates to creative problem solving.  When you’re approaching a negotiation as a win-win situation and you’re listening to the needs of the other party, creative problem solving can help design a solution that meets everyone’s needs.  Negotiation is about more than winning the highest contract.

4.  Patience. Many negotiations take time.  This is particularly true when forging new territory with a client or vendor.  Creating a solution that works for both businesses can take several drafts, have to be approved by several parties, and quite honestly many businesses aren’t accustomed to win-win negotiations so they may take some time to adjust to the concept.  Give them the time they need because when you show you’re willing to be patient and that you’re invested in their interests too, they’ll be willing to work with you today and ten years from now.  You’ll form a lasting and mutually beneficial relationship.

5.  Research.  Take the time to learn all you can about the business you’re negotiating with and you’ll be one step ahead to understanding their needs, concerns and how you can work together to come up with a mutually beneficial solution.

6.  Confidence is the key to a successful negotiation.  If you show fear, the person or company you’re negotiating with can perceive that as power over you or a lack of confidence in your business product or service.

7.  Knowing when to Walk Away.  All negotiations do not result in a win-win situation.  Sometimes it’s better to walk away but more importantly it is better to be prepared to walk away.  When a negotiation is a MUST then it gives some of your power away.  Go into a negotiation with a positive attitude and a desire to make it work; however keep the awareness that it may not in your back pocket.

Negotiating is an art, there’s no doubt about it, however with the right attitude, planning, and confidence it is an art and a skill that you can master.

God’s Big Idea for Your Business

Posted by Robert Moment | small business | Wednesday 16 July 2008 4:09 pm

Is your “Big Idea” for your business in line with God’s idea for your life?  Many of us hope and pray that our dreams of starting a business will be successful and we ask for God’s help and guidance as we launch our big idea for a successful business.  But what if our plans aren’t in line with God’s Big Idea for what our business should be?  How can we tell?

We have two options for starting a business.  The first is speculation, which is where most people start.  We take risks and just hope that things will work out for the best.  The second way is to ask the Creator to show us the way – and that’s a sure-fire path to success.  It may not happen overnight and it may not be on your timetable, but it will be the kind of success that God wants for you – the kind of real, true success that matters.

Start and grow a business that follows God’s Big Idea, not yours!

Focusing on ourselves will never fulfill our life’s purpose because it consumes us and takes us down the wrong path.  The more we focus on ourselves and the trappings of worldly success, the farther we are from God.  But everything starts and ends with God – or it should.  Remember, it’s not about you!  People have made this mistake for thousands of years, searching for meaning and purpose in their lives and not finding it despite the accumulation of wealth and fame.

The Goal Isn’t As Important as How You Get There

The mistake made by many people who are starting a business is in thinking that the real purpose is to achieve an ultimate goal.  They think they will achieve happiness when they make a certain amount of money, open so many stores or are able to buy an expensive house.  They think the end result is the measure of their success.  They are so wrong!

The true measure of success – especially in the eyes of God – is how you achieve the results!  Did you enjoy yourself and use your gifts and talents wisely while you were working towards your goals?  Did you achieve anything worthwhile for others during your climb to the top?

There are lots of self-help books on the market that suggest ways to discover your life’s purpose.  Being successful and fulfilling your life’s purpose aren’t the same thing.  You can be successful by this world’s standards and still miss the true purpose for which God created you.

If the starting point of your business ideas are self-centered questions like, “What type of business do I want to start?”  “How can I become successful quickly?” and “What do I want to do with my life?” it may be time to start a dialogue with God and focus on where your gifts and talents could take you.

“The Lord will fulfill His purpose for my life.”

-Psalm 138:8

Ask Him, “Lord, how can I use my talents for You?”  “What kind of business idea would use my gifts best?” and “What would I most love to do that would glorify you and  bless others and give me personal satisfaction?”

Remember that personal satisfaction doesn’t mean monetary gain.  To discover God’s purpose for your life you must turn to God’s word and discover what He has in store for you.   God has given each and every one of us talents, skills and gifts.  When we discover our destiny and do what we’re good at naturally, life becomes a pleasure we can share with others.  Don’t take this precious gift for granted.  We should all love what we are doing and wake up every day with enthusiasm and passion for what we do.  That is the true measure of success.

“We have different gifts, according to the grace given us…let him use it in proportion to his faith.”

-Romans 12:6

How to Write a Press Release

Posted by Robert Moment | marketing | Tuesday 15 July 2008 2:01 am

How often do you take advantage of Press Releases as a Marketing Strategy?  A PR marketing strategy can be an important part of your overall marketing efforts for your business.  Unfortunately, however, many small business owners overlook the power of the press release.

When you write a great press release, positioned properly, announcing a new service, new products, or a new direction, the better your chances that a reporter, news website, or other media representative will pick it up and run a story on you or your business.

It’s important to recognize that the media finds a large percentage of their story ideas on the Internet.  Writing a good press release will answer the 5 W’s:  Who, What, Where, When, and Why.

To catch the reader’s attention, though, so he will actually move on to reading the content, you need to think about your title.  Have a strong headline that will immediately catch the eye and grab the attention of the journalist.  Your headline serves a purpose other than just attracting the journalist.  It will provide the reader the primary topic of your PR, and make it more searchable within a PR database.  Therefore, it is important to have your keywords in the headline.

Remember that a press release is neither a sales letter nor an advertisement.  Therefore, you shouldn’t write the press release in an attempt to sell your products or services.  Your goal with your press releases is to educate the journalist in a way that answers the question they all have, “What’s in it for me?”  If you can tell the journalist quickly and directly why they should be listening to you, they will then be willing to focus on what you have to offer, and share it with their targeted audience and readers.

Of course, press releases are only effective forms of marketing when they are properly distributed among media representatives.  Therefore, the next time you release something newsworthy, submit it to online Press Release databases like these:

www.prweb.com
www.prleap.com
www.1888pressrelease.com
www.clickpress.com
www.free-news-release.com
www.free-press-release-center.info
www.pr.com

Writing a press release will help increase your link popularity, which is extremely helpful to any serious search engine optimization strategy.  This is true because free press release distribution centers will typically allow you to identify some keywords for your press release.  Increased link popularity will also drive more traffic to your website in addition to the favorable page ranking you’ll see through the SEO results.  From a web strategy point of view, you may consider upgrading your account with Free Press Release Centers because your press release will then remain in their system forever, instead of only a limited time.

When you submit the keywords for your press release, make sure that the PR itself is also optimized with those keywords.  Use the keywords that are most relevant to your website, services, products, books, etc.  This will translate into more traffic because each time someone searches for information, your website will appear among the results as relevant to the topic.  Visit website http://www.goodkeywords.com
– a free service that will help you search for keywords and phrases related to your particular industry.

Embrace the power of writing Press Releases as a complete PR Marketing Strategy for your small business.
